Basic Details of the ADE Photo Safari -- Denver ISTE2010
(Note that plans listed below are subject to change prior to the actual safari date.)
Date: Sunday, June 27, 2010
Location: Denver, CO during ISTE2010
Venue: Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, CO
(and surrounding areas)
Time: 2:30 AM - 2:30 PM
(purpose for early departure: to arrive in the park in time to catch the "golden light" of early morning)
Target Audience:
This is intended for, first and foremost, Apple Distinguished Educators. However, we will open up registration to others, as space permits and interest grows.
Safari Route & Activities:
- Vans/busses will depart Denver from some specified location at 2:30 AM. Departure time is firm.
- Destination: Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP)
- Breakfast: During the van/bus ride to RMNP, we will distribute a simple breakfast snack of granola/fruit bars to tide us over until we break for breakfast later in the morning.
- Upon arrival at RMNP, we will dispense immediately to locations that provide the best possible morning light. Daybreak occurs at approximately 4:30 in the high mountains.
- At approximately 9:30 or 10:00, we will take a breakfast break. It's possible that we will be able to interact with vendors at this time; however, we do not anticipate long-winded vendor presentations.
- Lunch will be arranged at approximately 12:30-1:00, depending upon our activities.
- Vans/busses will depart for Denver at approximately 2:30, in order that you may rest awhile and freshen up prior to the opening keynote.
- .... (please add other details to this list)
Registration/Participation Fee:
Since we have no corporate sponsorship for this event, we anticipate a registration/participation fee to cover the costs of snacks, water, box lunch, park entrance fee, and assorted accessories/necessities needed for a successful day. The price will be determined later by the leadership team. We are hoping to keep the fee under $75 each.
Bonus Features:
- Pro Photographers: Plans are underway to invite several professional photographers to accompany us so that we may have coaching on best techniques for landscape and nature photography. Details to be announced in the future. Woo Hoo!
- Equipment manufacturers/vendors: Since many of us do not own all the lenses and other photographic accessories we would like, the leadership team is contacting leading vendors to join us. For example, it is anticipated that both Nikon and Canon reps will be available to loan camera bodies and/or lenses to participants. In addition, we hope to have reps for tripods, ball heads, filters, bags, etc. available. If possible, we hope vendors will agree to sell these products to ADEs upon completion of the safari at a significantly reduced price (so they don't have to box up and carry the products back with them). Stay tuned for more details.
- Video: We have contacted John Woody to discuss the possibility of having him video not only many of the beautiful nature scenes, but also the ADEs performing our work. We anticipate multiple applications of the resulting videos. If you are a seasoned videographer, we encourage you to let us know so that we can include you in the plans for ensuring top-quality video products.
- Aperture processing: Each ADE has received a NFR copy of Aperture 2.1, as a part of your membership. So, to help ensure that we leave Denver with the best possible images, a team of Aperture experts will hold post-safari processing sessions. To participate in this, you will need to have sufficient hard drive storage space, whether it's on your own computer or some external hard drive. Also, it would be a great idea to bring large capacity flash drives, in case you need to offload some photos that will be combined into an ADE exhibit. More details forthcoming.
- Nature interactions: Plans are underway to have member(s) of the US Park Service to accompany our group, in order that, as we photograph in the park, we will be educated about what we see. This will strengthen the educational value of what we produce.
- ... (more to be added)
All participants must agree to the copyright parameters. All images captured during this photo safari will be copyright-free and will be made available to others for educational purposes. If watermarks are added to images, they must not include any copyright information. ADEs are about creating, sharing, and advocating for enhanced educational opportunities, so it is in that spirit that we ensure the public domain nature of the images we capture.
